By the 34-12 scoreline, you would not guess that the Florida Gators had any trouble defeating Miami, but without Tim Tebow the Gators’ offense clearly was not as dominant as they had been in the past.

In the first three quarters, the Gators’ offense had accumulated a grand total of twenty-six yards. Against the RedHawks, who only one one game last season, that definitely is not up to par. John Brantley and center Mike Pouncey had difficulty connecting on a whopping thirteen snaps, which lead to a loss of 55 yards. They also had three lost fumbles and two turnovers on downs.

Pouncey spoke to Florida Today about the offense’s inefficiency after the game.

“It was bad,” Pouncey said. “We were trying to motivate each other. We just weren’t playing as an offense. We couldn’t get anything going. It’s partly my fault we couldn’t get the offense going with the (bad) snaps. I’ll be in in the morning to fix it. I pride myself on being great, and that just killed me. I didn’t play great.”

Luckily for Florida, their defense came up with some big plays.

Junior cornerback Janoris Jenkins and senior safety Ahmad Black had 67 and 47-yard interception returns for touchdowns, respectively.

The fourth-ranked Gators will only have one week to improve, as they will play South Florida next Saturday.

Ana Ivanovic has enjoyed a resurgence at the US Open amidst personal heartbreak after her and Australian golfer Adam Scott parted ways.

According to the Daily Mail, Ivanovic ended her relationship with Scott this summer after the former world number one’s ranking plunged out of the top 50.

Ivanovic has surrounded herself with a new team and seems to be more confident than ever.

She will face the second seeded Kim Clijsters tomorrow.

Matt Leinart was on top of the world when he was drafted 10th overall in 2006, but his stay with Arizona was rocky at best.

Kurt Warner lead Arizona to the Super Bowl in 2008, but following his retirement at the end of last season, the pressure was all on Leinart. After being given several chances to perform, it was clear that tension was mounting as his play failed to meet the team’s standards.

It had been rumored that Leinart would be traded, but when that failed to pan out, he was released Saturday.

Overall, Leinart played in 29 games with 17 starts, in which he threw for 3,893 yards with 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

The wind was reaking havoc on the players, but Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova cruised to easy victories, regardless.

Wozniacki only lost one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei. She was in control of the match from beginning to end and she made her 19 year-old opponent work on every point. The top-seeded Wozniacki has only lost three games total through three matches.

Maria Sharapova ended Beatrice Capra’s fairy tail won, by defeating the young American 6-0, 6-0. Capra was overwhelmed by Sharapova’s powerful groundstrokes and the strong wind certainly did not do the 18 year-old any favors.

Following her victory, Sharapova said that the match was played “in about as tough of conditions as you’re gonna get,” so she was glad to advance in straight sets.

Sharapova’s victory sets up a blockbuster match between her and Wozniacki. Sharapova leads their head-to-head matchups 2-0.

NFL teams are making their final cuts and, as a result, the Washington Redskins have informed running back Willie Parker that he will be released.

Parker, who made the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2007 while playing with the Steelers, was signed this spring by Washington to a one-year deal and was told that there would be an open competition between him, Larry Johnson, Clinton Portis, and Ryan Torain for the starting position.

Parker finished 2009 with 389 yards on 98 carries.

Under the lights in New York, Denis Istomin gave the number one ranked player in the world all he could handle.

But, as the top seeded player should, Nadal responded and showed his competitors exactly why he was pegged as a favorite coming into the US Open.

Nadal’s improved serve was the highlight of his first round match and that continued tonight. Not only did he hit an ace that was clocked at 134 mph, but he had 8 aces and won 83% of the points on his first serve.

Though he lost in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(5), 7-5, Denis Istomin gained thousands of new fans in New York after the display he put on against Nadal. Istomin came into the US Open at his career-high ranking of 39th in the world, which was boosted after making the final one week ago in New Haven. Istomin was able to keep-up with Nadal during long rallies at times and a few of his shots were so good that Nadal’s only response was a friendly applause.

The fans that had packed Arthur Ashe Stadium roared when Istomin had chances to take hold of the match, but Nadal showed them and Istomin why he is the top ranked player in the world. He clawed back in the second set tiebreak after being down 5-1 and when Istomin had break point chances, Nadal rose to the challenge to save the points.

Near the end of the third set, Istomin was clearly suffering physically and just like many of Nadal’s former opponents, he had been worn down. It took 2 hrs and 44 minutes, but the Spaniard got the job done.

His next match will be the Frenchman Gilles Simon, who was formerly ranked in the top 10 in the world.

Venus Williams looked shaky at first, as she traded breaks with her opponent, Mandy Minella of Luxembourg, but she got her game together and cruised to an easy straight sets win.

She had never played the virtual unknown Minella and following her victory, she admitted that she did not know what to expect from her opponent.

Overall, Williams played well and looked to be one of the favorites to take the title, but under the lights in New York, it was her fashion that again got the attention. Wearing her third dress in as many matches, Williams played in a tight, black dress that had enough glitter to blind the fans in the upper decks.

In her fourth round match, Williams will play Shahar Peer, who defeated the 19th seed Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-4.

Second seeded Kim Clijsters also had a shaky start before cruising her way to an emphatic win.

Clijsters was down 3-0 early against the 27th seeded Petra Kvitova, but after that she won 12 games in a row to take the victory 6-3, 6-0.

After the match, Clijsters said she was happy to have won without playing her best. Her next opponent will be Ana Ivanovic, who has reached the fourth round for the first time in three years.

Other winners on the women’s side were fifth seeded Samantha Stosur and 12th seeded Elena Dementieva, who will face each other next.

Going into the preseason, Sage Rosenfels was the number two quarterback for the Vikings, behind Tarvaris Jackson.

But after Brett Favre’s return and rookie Joe Webb’s sensational play during the preseason and somebody had to be the odd man out and apparently that was Sage Rosenfels.

Rosenfels and running back Darius Reynaud were traded to the New York Giants for undisclosed draft picks. According to the Vikings’ website, they will receive a pick in next year’s draft, as well as, a conditional pick in 2012.

Rosenfels will apparently fill-in for injured backup quarterback Jim Sorgi, who was placed on the injured reserve after injuring his shoulder.
